MOD shops are a combination maker space/ coworking facility. You can pay to just have access to the equipment, you can pay to have access to the equipment and access to the jobs that a given to the center. The norm is for the first one to deliver the object requested get paid for it. Usually only someone says they have started working on it, no one else bother trying to go after it.

Though each shop has their own rules for how the jobs are given out. The second most common is for them to ask the members that aren't currently work in order of some combination of seniority and customer satisfaction of pass projects. And if no one currently as the shop take it, it goes on the board for anyone to take as first come, first served basis.

You go to a MOD shop, and they make it, the shops customizing the items just for you and show off their skills, each item they produce is an artisan piece, because they have advanced magic/tech that allows them to add complexity to the object. The magic/tech produces IKEA-like sets that have to be assembled by hand.

The shops make the basic ingredients that the magic/tech uses to make the kits from. Comes up with the designs of the items the Magic/tech makes kits for them to the kits.

The shops share their designs because it's prestigious to have other shops use them, but they don't share how to assemble the kits so that they have an advantage in the production of making the objects they design.

The design is more of a 'publish or perish' like an academic paper. Publishing a design is like publishing a paper and having another shop use it is like a have your paper cited. They have something like Thingavese with 3d preview of the designs and a description, but when to download the design it counted as you using it, the actual amount of items you make from the design isn't important, so shops are honest or don't report them at all, the only people that report uses are those that actually care about there is accurate information.
