When you practice a skill with a teacher, the teacher shows you how the skill is done, the amount you learn is base off of the teacher's EL in the skill. Also, when you practice you earn points if either you or your teacher succeeds in their skill check, this makes it worthwhile practicing with a teacher of a lower level.

If studying with a teacher, the teacher tells you about the skill, the amount you learn is based off of his Scholarly Level, which is like EL but starting SL is based on Elq, the same Expertise Points are used for EL and SL.
