Some weapons, specifically practice weapons like sticks and tournament lances, have a damage maximum. If they deal more than (usually 2) damage, they break instead of dealing more damage. In a sport, the objective is usually to break your weapon on your opponent, which under normal circumstances would have been a critical hit.
